What is LXLE?

LXLE is a GNU/Linux operating system based on Lubuntu which is an official Ubuntu OS using the LXDE desktop enviroment. It is designed to be a drop in and go OS, primarily for aging computers. The objectives include ease of installation onto any computer, and proper configuration for new users - without the need for laborious tweaking after install. The LXLE respin follows the same long term support schedule (LTS) as Ubuntu.

In short, LXLE is an eclectic respin of Lubuntu with it's own community based support.

What Is A Respin?

In the beginning, the GNU Operating System community paired up with the Linux Kernel developers, and produced the first GNU/Linux Operating System. This GNU/Linux OS, in the broadest sense, was the root from which every subsequent Linux system emerged, in its hundreds of different forms. (Read more - Richard Stallman.)

From the original GNU/Linux OS - the Linux roots and tree trunk - we see major branches develop over time. From those branches sprout smaller branches, twigs and leaves. In the broadest sense of the word, respin might include all subsequent development from the GNU/Linux system, to varying degrees. Usually on the developers' websites, one finds an explanation of the type of respinning that has occured, including the source of code that particular distribution (distro) used as a base.

Synonymous to the word respin, we find such words used as spin, remaster, remix, and variant. In all cases, the developers download a form of code from a Linux distro, manipulate that source code, tweak it, add things to it, take things off, and alter the purpose in some way. Afterwards, a new distribution is created in the form of an ISO file, which may be distributed to other people who download it from the internet. This will be used to create a bootable installation disk, or usb, or simply used as a live install from the bootable media - with a new name.

Distro Philosophy

  • Stick with LTS only releases of Ubuntu to ensure hardware & software support.
  • Based on Lubuntu Linux to ensure a fast capable desktop for aging computers.
  • Keep desktop and other major software updated to the latest stable version.
  • Provide a complete drop in and go replacement for XP, Vista, 7 Starter/Basic.
  • Cover most users everyday needs by providing an excellent set of default apps.
  • Add useful necessary mods and tweaks, to improve performance & functions.
  • Develop a beautiful modern looking intuitive desktop for anyone to use easily.
  • Save system resources and spend them wisely on capable, feature rich apps.

Development Cycle

Our development cycle is quite simple. We stick with LTS releases of Ubuntu/Lubuntu. Our new versions of LXLE correspond with the updates provided to the LTS release. In other words, our versions between LTS releases are the 6 month incremental updates.

Example: LXLE 12.04.1, 12.04.2, 12.04.3, 12.04.4, etc
